PRE-RESULTS REPORT: nearest catalyst is the Q2 FY27 print

This report is written before the Q2 and H1 FY27 results. Results are expected on 26 Oct 2026 (date shown by Screener; a separate board-meeting intimation is not cited in the research files). The earnings call is fixed for Tuesday 27 Oct 2026 at 2:30 pm IST (company letter to exchanges dated 19 Oct 2026; speakers: MD Dr Suresh Ramachandran, EVP Kunal Mittal, CFO Anil Nawal, Company Secretary Deepika Trivedi). Comparison base: Q2 FY26 sales Rs 930 cr (-6% YoY), EBITDA Rs 218 cr (23.4%), PAT Rs 178 cr; H1 FY26 sales Rs 1,987 cr (+9%), PAT Rs 356 cr (+11%). The company holds earnings calls only for H1 and full year (29 Oct 2024, 28 May 2025, 28 Oct 2025, 28 May 2026), so the 27 Oct call is the only management Q&A before Q3. [Fact] Nothing in this report uses Q2 FY27 numbers; the latest reported quarter is Q1 FY27 (quarter to 30 Jun 2026, filed 27 Jul 2026).

Analyst Notes

[Analyst View] Aamara Capital, 21 Oct 2026, written five days before the Q2 FY27 print

What happened. The operations held up and the share price did not. In a year management called one of the most challenging it had seen, SCIL posted record FY26 margins (EBITDA 20.7%, PAT Rs 543 cr), and in Q1 FY27 it held a 21.9% EBITDA margin on flat sales (+0.6%) with domestic revenue down 3.4% and exports up 26%. Yet the stock fell about 32%, from Rs 565 on 14 Aug 2026 to Rs 384 on 21 Oct, and the P/E compressed from a five-year median of about 50x to 33.1x, the lowest in Screener's series since February 2020. No company disclosure explains the fall. The window contains only analyst-meet notices (Motilal Oswal 19 Aug, Elara 3 Sep), the board reconstitution of 1 Sep and the Q2 call notice of 19 Oct. The 3 Jul 2026 spike (+13.8% on 29.5 mn shares, 73x average volume) had only 8.1% delivery on 355,852 trades, so it looks like intraday trading churn, not a block sale; I do not know its cause and will not guess. The September 2026 shareholding shows domestic institutions still buying (9.68%, up for seven straight quarters) and FIIs still trimming (2.89%).

What the market is pricing. At 33.1x reported and 33.6x adjusted trailing earnings, about 25x EV/EBITDA and about 39.5x core earnings once the treasury is stripped out, the price still assumes a premium franchise: a 4% five-year sales CAGR and 8% profit CAGR give a PEG near 4, against a peer median P/E of 20.1x (SCIL is about 67% above it, and above every large listed peer except NACL). The premium rests on three things, none of them yet in the numbers: the parent's pipeline (Excalia Max, Lentigo, two molecules in Indian trials), the Dahej plant (Rs 150 cr, commercial only in FY2028-29) and margin durability. Cash of Rs 2,549 cr (management, June 2026) is about 13% of the market cap and earns a treasury yield on a 12% payout. A fall from 50x to 33x is large, but it still leaves the stock priced for delivery, not for disappointment. [Analyst View]

What tempers the quality. First, earnings quality needs adjusting: Q1 FY27 reported PAT of Rs 214.5 cr (+20%) includes a Rs 26.9 cr one-off insurance gain (the FY23 Bhavnagar fire), so the underlying number is about Rs 194.5 cr (+9%). FY26 carried a Rs 16.1 cr Labour Code charge. Other income was Rs 146.7 cr, 20% of FY26 PBT, and treasury income of about Rs 136 cr was 92% of it. Second, working capital is lengthening: inventory days were 124 at June 2026 against 90 a year earlier (Rs 884 cr, 1.2x annual EBITDA), deliberately, to cover West Asia and freight shocks. Third, gross margin fell to 39.2% in Q1 FY27 from 42.0% in FY26 with input costs up 10 to 15% (20 to 25% on some items) and three price rises between 15 Mar and 1 May 2026. Fourth, cash conversion was 82% of PAT in FY26 (97% cumulatively over FY22-FY26), depressed by a Rs 96.7 cr fall in trade payables.

FY27 reported numbers will be noisy by design. The shareholder-approved FY27 related-party limit with the parent is Rs 16,235 mn (50.6% of FY26 consolidated sales), against an approved Rs 7,100 mn for FY26 and an actual Rs 4,754 mn (15.6% of sales on the company's basis; 14.7% on revenue from operations of Rs 32,383 mn). Rs 10,000 mn of the FY27 limit is an animal-nutrition (DL-methionine) pass-through bought from SCC and sold back-to-back on a high-seas basis at a fixed margin of about 4 to 5%, priced near Rs 500/kg against about Rs 211/kg on 8,740 tonnes in FY26. It is booked gross in revenue, so it will inflate FY27 revenue and dilute EBITDA and gross margin percentages without adding much profit (a Rs 1,000 cr pass-through at 4.5% adds about Rs 45 cr). Read FY27 on an agro-only basis; core agro grew 5 to 6% in FY26 against 2.8% reported. A new 3% royalty on two products (capped at Rs 2 cr in the approval; nil in FY24 to FY26) starts in FY27: immaterial in rupees, but a precedent with no sunset clause.

Governance is a watch list, not a red flag. The positives are real: promoter 75.00% with no pledge, no ESOP, an unchanged share count since 2019, an unmodified BSR & Co audit, 100% board attendance and 100% of public votes in favour of the FY27 parent envelope. The watch items: on 1 Sep 2026 the independent chair (Dr Mukul Asher), the MD (Chetan Shah) and the executive director (Sushil Marfatia) all left their roles and non-executive Ninad Gupte resigned, so executives on the board fall from three to one and independents are three of seven (43%). Dr Suresh Ramachandran is MD to 31 May 2028; Shah becomes non-executive and is expected to chair, with an advisory fee of Rs 26.5 mn (up to Rs 30 mn in total with commission and sitting fee). At the 27 Jul 2026 AGM, 31% of public-institution votes opposed that advisory fee and about 11% opposed independent director N. Sivaraman, who sits on eight other boards. On a public-only count only about 69.7% of votes favoured the fee, below the 75% a special resolution needs; it passed because the 75% promoter voted in favour. Capital allocation also needs "formal approvals from our board and our parent company SCC".

Disclosure and track record. SCIL holds calls only for H1 and full year, so Q1 FY27 has no transcript and the numbers behind the quarter come from a deck and an AGM speech that disagree on the drivers of export growth. Management has delivered on profit and margin ("maintain or improve" was met; FY26 EBITDA margin 20.7% against 20.1%) but has been late or smaller on projects: Dahej went from "Rs 300 cr to start" (May 2025) to Rs 150 cr approved (Jan 2026) with revenue in Q2 FY2028-29; the Tarapur Excalia technical slipped about seven months; TopGrain slipped two or more quarters; animal-nutrition distribution was discontinued in January 2026 and restarted in May 2026; the semiconductor-chemicals tie-up has been "very soon" for 17 months. Tab 11 carries the 20-line ledger.

What would change the view. (1) The 26 to 27 Oct print: Q2 FY26 is a soft base (sales Rs 930 cr, -6%), so domestic growth of +5 to 10% is the bar for "recovery"; gross margin against 43.1% and EBITDA margin against 23.4% a year ago; export durability after +26%; the animal-nutrition run-rate at the new price. (2) Whether TopGrain and Helibax actually launched in Q2. (3) A second Dahej project or a formal semiconductor decision, and any change to the 12% payout. (4) Inventory days and the Brazil-affiliate receivable (about Rs 83.6 cr, about 211 days against 83 company-wide). (5) The Delhi High Court on the glyphosate notification. (6) The first commentary from Dr Ramachandran as MD. For scale: at the adjusted TTM EPS of about Rs 11.4, 25x implies about Rs 286, 33.6x is today's Rs 384 and the 5-year median of 50x would be about Rs 572; the peer median of 20.1x would be about Rs 230 [Est., sensitivity, not a target].

Where I land. A debt-free, high-return, cleanly audited franchise with a visible but slow growth path and a parent that controls technology, pricing of intra-group trade and cash. The de-rating has removed part of the premium but not all of it, the governance transition is only five weeks old, and a pre-flagged noisy year (pass-through revenue, royalty, one-offs) arrives with a print in days. The verdict in Tab 13 is a watching brief with explicit triggers.

4.4 Animal nutrition (AND): a volatile, low-margin pass-through

ItemDetail
What it isSCIL distributes SUMIMET-P (DL-methionine 99%) and SUMIMET-L (hydroxy analogue 88%) sourced from SCC on a back-to-back, high-seas basis with fixed margin and no pricing, inventory or currency risk. Margin about 4 to 5% (the Q3 FY26 deck said "low-single-digit")
TimelineQ4 FY25 AND revenue Rs 65.3 cr; Q3 FY26 distribution discontinued on SCC's global realignment (about Rs 72 cr of revenue lost in the quarter; "only in exceptional case-by-case circumstances" in future, Jan 2026); Q4 FY26 AND revenue Rs 37.5 cr; distribution resumed from May 2026 because of supply and logistics problems elsewhere (reversed in about 4 months)
Volumes and pricesFY26: 8,740 tonnes at about Rs 200 to 211/kg (high-seas sales Rs 1,848 mn, consistent with 8,740 t x Rs 211/kg [Est.]). FY27 purchase estimate from SCC Rs 1,000 cr at a Rs 500/kg reference ("may not be sustainable once conditions normalise")
Effect on reported numbersRevenue could jump with limited profit impact. The Rs 10,000 mn approval is a ceiling: at FY26 volumes and Rs 500/kg the line would be about Rs 437 cr, and the full ceiling implies up to about Rs 800 cr (1,000 less 185 = 815 before rounding) more than FY26's Rs 185 cr [Est.]. At 4.5% margin Rs 1,000 cr adds about Rs 45 cr of operating profit, so reported EBITDA and gross margin percentages will look lower
Share of mixAND plus EHD 8% of FY26 revenue, 13% in Q1 FY27 (AND and EHD +11% YoY)

4.5 Environmental Health, Barrix and metal phosphides

BusinessStatusManagement focus
Household and public health (EHD)Technicals sold to household-insecticide brand owners; branded public-health and termiticide products through distributors and professional pest-control operators. AR25 MD&A expected the household-insecticide supply business to grow above 10%. Standalone size Not AvailablePublic-health and PCO channel; glyphosate PCO-only notification is a separate overhang
Barrix Agro Sciences (85%)FY26 revenue Rs 89.9 cr (FY25 Rs 58.3 cr, +54%); PBT Rs 1.2 cr; PAT Rs 0.08 cr vs Rs 6.3 cr. Q4 FY25 call: first full year, revenue +82%, EBITDA margin from negative to +16%. Hit by the industry-wide biostimulant freeze (mid-June to Dec 2025; only about 145 products approved); approvals under the new regulation came Nov-Dec 2025 and sales restartedPheromone traps, chromatic sheets, biostimulants; goodwill Rs 60.4 cr exposed
Metal phosphides (Gajod)FY26 +11%, Q4 FY26 +16%, Q1 FY27 +21%; 10% of revenueFumigation demand from warehouses
Speciality / SCC moleculesSpecialty about 30% of domestic revenue; portfolio rejig of low-margin speciality products said (May 2025) to "continue for one more year"; margins "not one-time"Excalia Max, Lentigo, TopGrain, Helibax
Exports and custom synthesisExport prices "appear to have bottomed" (Oct 2025); Japan exports described by an analyst as below earlier guidance (about Rs 125 cr FY25, Rs 250 cr next year); custom synthesis to SCC Rs 100 to 150 cr a yearDahej from FY2028-29

Fastest grower and weakest segment [Analyst View]. Herbicides (FY26 +19%, Q4 +87%) and metal phosphides (+11%, Q1 FY27 +21%) are the fastest growers; PGR and the biological lines are the pressure point (share 11% to 9% to 6% on regulation and a bad grape season), and exports to Brazil (-26% in FY26) are the weakest geography, partly offset by Africa (+26%), UAE and the parent.

Organic vs inorganicFully organic. Barrix (acquired Dec 2023) contributes Rs 89.9 cr (FY26) of revenue; no acquisition in the period
Volume vs priceFY25: volume-led (domestic branded +20%, exports +30%) with about 10% price erosion. FY26: core agro growth +5 to 6% "all volume"; prices stable until three increases (15 Mar, 1 Apr, 1 May 2026, maybe 1 Jun) against 10 to 15% input inflation (some 20 to 25%)
Animal-nutrition distortionHigh-seas sales Rs 265 cr (FY25) vs Rs 185 cr (FY26) vs a Rs 1,000 cr FY27 purchase ceiling (up to about Rs 800 cr of extra gross revenue, 815 before rounding). Reported FY26 +2.8% vs +5 to 6% excluding AND

Management (May 2026): "margins which we are getting will be the most sustainable"; it would not guide a decline. Portfolio rejig of low-margin speciality lines drove FY25 gross margin +337 bps
EBITDA margin trend16.7% (FY24) to 20.1% (FY25) to 20.7% (FY26); CRISIL: 19 to 20% sustainable; downside trigger below 12%, upside above 20%

Depreciation and interestDepreciation flat at Rs 66 cr (capex only Rs 44 cr in FY26); interest is lease interest
One-time items(1) Labour Codes exceptional Rs 16.1 cr (FY26, past-service cost); (2) insurance claim gain Rs 26.9 cr (Q1 FY27); (3) FY24 special interim dividend Rs 5.00 (cash, not P&L); (4) Q3 FY26 animal-nutrition discontinuation (about Rs 72 cr revenue)
Tax25.4% FY26 (24% to 26% range); income-tax contingent liability grew (Tab 6)
ECL and bad debtsECL charge including bad debts Rs 13.7 cr FY26 vs Rs 1.9 cr FY25 (Rs 136.58 mn vs Rs 19.13 mn); allowance fell to 7.6% of gross receivables from 11.3%

Earnings-quality check

Reported PAT converts to operating cash at 82% in FY26 (CFO Rs 445.5 cr vs PAT Rs 543 cr) and 97% over FY22 to FY26 (CFO Rs 2,266 cr vs PAT Rs 2,345 cr). CFO is struck before interest income (Rs 76.4 cr received sits in investing), so adding it gives about Rs 522 cr, or about 88% of PAT after Rs 44 cr capex [Est.]. FY26 conversion was depressed by a Rs 96.7 cr fall in trade payables (payable days 106 to 86 on tighter supplier terms). About 20% of PBT is treasury income, and about 40x core earnings is the more honest multiple (Tab 12). [Analyst View] Cash-flow detail is in Tab 6.

7.9 Royalty: the new element

3% on two products from FY27 (nil in FY24, FY25, FY26)

SCIL pays 3% of net sales on two selected products for trademark and technology know-how. SCC granted exclusive trademark rights and waived the obligation to buy the technical-grade active ingredient from SCC for those products, so SCIL may source cheaper elsewhere. The cap in the approval is Rs 20 mn (Rs 2 cr), implying product net sales of about Rs 67 cr at the cap [Est.]; actual "expected to be lower". Products may be added later and there is no sunset clause. SCC says it charges no royalty on similar products to other group companies because they must buy the technical from SCC. AGM answer: "saving much more than 3%". Impact is 0.06% of FY26 sales at the cap [Est.], but it is a precedent set without an independent valuation [Analyst View] [G AR26 #p52-53; CALL]. Management also said India has been "elevated to the same tier as Japan, Brazil, North America, Europe" for early-stage trials of SCC's discovery molecules, with two molecules already in Indian trials: positive alignment.

FY27 envelope jumps 2.3x to Rs 16,235 mn (50.6% of sales) on a Rs 10,000 mn animal-nutrition pass-through at about 2.4x price: low margin, no risk to SCIL, but inflates revenue, creates a Rs 1,000 cr dependency on SCC supply, no valuation or bidding. Medium
2. No pledge, no ESOP dilution, unchanged share count since 2019, no group-company loans, contingent liabilities about 1.1% of PAT2. Royalty precedent: 3% on two products, no sunset, after years of nil. Medium-low

Board hollowing at 1 Sep 2026: independent chair, MD, ED and a NED exit in one quarter; the new Chair is the outgoing MD, now paid Rs 26.5 mn to advise (31% of institutional votes against); executive directors 3 to 1; depth shifts to Japanese SVPs. Medium
4. Granular related-party disclosure; omnibus approval with promoter excluded from the vote; purchases from SCC fell in rupees FY23 to FY26 (407 to 334 cr; per-party flag applies)4. 8.1 Upstream: what SCIL depends on

LayerWhatWho and whereEvidence
Parent technicals and finished goodsSCC-invented actives and formulations imported for formulation and sale in India (INDIFLIN technical for Excalia Max; imazosulfuron for Lentigo; methionine)SCC (Japan); US and Japan plants make speciality actives[Fact] SCIL is "importing technical and formulating it in India"; for speciality "either manufactured at our global locations in USA or Japan or by us" [B-S5, S4]

8.2 Conversion inside SCIL

Technical-grade synthesis (Bhavnagar, Tarapur) to formulation and packing (Bhavnagar, Gajod, Vapi, Silvassa) to 60 depots to distribution. Technical plants run at 80 to 100% depending on the source (Tab 3), so growth in generics depends on Dahej (FY2028-29) or third-party sourcing. [Fact/Est.] [B-S5; S1 sl.29]

8.3 Downstream: who depends on SCIL

Domestic branded and bulk (84% of Q1 FY27 revenue; 79% FY26)Plants to 60 depots to about 10 to 15k direct distributors to about 40k dealers to about 4.4 million farmers; 77% of domestic revenue branded[B-S1 sl.15, 24]

Stickiness81% branded domestic share; 200+ registrations act as an entry barrier; 20+ mega brands; Every Day Farmers' Day outreach

8.4 Parent technology and licence dependence: the central structural point

#PointDetail
1Exclusive rights and brand[Fact] SCC granted SCIL exclusive rights to distribute SCC-innovated products in India under a formal distribution agreement, including use of SCC brand names and trademarks; "for several imported proprietary products, SCC is the sole registered import source" [B-S7 AR26 p.49]
2Technology flows one waySCIL imported no technology in 3 years in the statutory sense, but manufactures "using process know-how from the parent" (Dahej), and the Tarapur and Bhavnagar plants make SCC-invented molecules [B-S1 sl.29; S7 p.61]
3RoyaltyHistorically none. From FY27 3% of net sales on a "selected group of products" (currently 2) for trademark or know-how use where SCIL may buy the technical outside SCC; cap Rs 2 cr (Rs 20 mn) in the FY27 RPT approval; SCC does not charge group companies that must buy technicals from it [B-S7 p.50-51; S3; S9]
4FY27 related-party ceilingRs 16,235 mn = 50.59% of FY26 consolidated sales (sale of goods 1,500; purchase of agrochemicals and EHD plus reimbursements 4,600; animal nutrition 10,000; sale of services 50; purchase of services 65; royalty 20). FY26 actual with SCC Rs 4,753.8 mn = 15.6% of sales (FY26 approved envelope Rs 7,100 mn). Excluding animal nutrition the ceiling is Rs 6,235 mn, about 1.3x the FY26 actual [Est.]
5PurchasesPurchases from related parties 21.55% of total purchases FY26 (24.50% FY25). Purchases of goods from SCC Rs 333.8 cr FY26 vs Rs 399.6 cr FY25 (text-extracted; column alignment uncertain, Tab 7)
6Elevation of IndiaSCC places India in the same tier as Japan, Brazil, North America and Europe for early-stage trials; Dahej positioned as a global manufacturing hub; SCC's ICT and Mobility division and SCIL exploring high-purity semiconductor chemicals in India: no formal project announced as of 21 Oct 2026 (NSE list searched) [B-S3; S7 p.12]
7SCC nomineesDirectors Tadashi Katayama and Masanori Uzawa; SCC deputees in management (SVPs Suzuki, Shinomiya); the AGM RPT resolution passed with 100% of public votes (promoter excluded) [B-S1 sl.34; S18]
8Dependence assessment [Est.]Speciality (24 to 30% of revenue) is licence-dependent; generics (70 to 76%) are not. The growth levers (Excalia Max, Lentigo, Dahej, custom-synthesis revenue of Rs 100 to 150 cr) all depend on SCC's pipeline and approvals. The animal-nutrition stop and restart shows parent decisions move SCIL revenue directly

Supply-chain read [Analyst View]

Upstream, SCIL buys what it cannot make from a parent that is also its largest customer for exports and its approver of capex; downstream, it sells through a fragmented channel (top-10 = 3%) where it has real pricing discipline. Pricing power is therefore concentrated at the two ends: SCC controls access to the differentiated molecules and the terms of intra-group trade, and Chinese makers set the cost of generic technicals. The branded channel is the part SCIL owns.

Caveats: (a) SCIL's quarterly profit variance of +9.3% excludes the Rs 26.9 cr insurance exceptional (reported PAT +20%); (b) company-page P/E and ROCE for Rallis (25.2x, 12.8%), Dhanuka (13.0x, 28.3%) and Bayer (313x) differ because the pages were cached on other dates; peers-API values used; (c) SCIL's own ROCE definition gives 31% for FY26 vs 22.1% on Screener's basis [B-S1 sl.37]. Peer-median P/E 20.1x puts SCIL at about a 67% premium and above every large peer except NACL (loss-recovery distorted) [Est.].

9.6 What the comparison says [Analyst View]

9.7 Competitor profiles

CompetitorProfile [Est.]
UPLGlobal crop-protection and seeds group, largest Indian name, high leverage, Advanta seed and Brazil exposure; Q1 FY27 sales +10.5%
PI IndustriesInnovation-led custom synthesis for global MNCs plus a domestic branded business and recent pharma, biologicals and acquisition moves; Q1 FY27 sales -10.4%, PAT -39%
Bayer CropScience (India)MNC, patented molecules and seeds; the domestic comparable for SCIL's speciality push; Q1 FY27 sales -4.2%, PAT +15%
Dhanuka AgritechPure-play domestic formulator, channel-driven, no debt; one of the closest business-model peers (named by SCIL management)
Rallis India (Tata group)Domestic crop care plus seeds; named by management
Coromandel (with NACL)Fertiliser-led, owns a crop-protection business and drone services; larger, different margin structure
Sharda CropchemRegistration-led generic exporter and distributor, Europe, NAFTA, LatAm; export normalisation lifted PAT from Rs 32 cr (FY24) to Rs 681 cr (FY26)
Global innovators (SCC's own competitive set)Syngenta, Bayer, Corteva, BASF, FMC, UPL/ADAMA, Nufarm. SCC global crop-protection rank and competitor metrics: Not Available (searched the AGM notice and AR26)
Chinese generic makersPrice setters in technicals; SCIL's chairman says SCIL competes with Chinese prices on exported generics through process cost savings and has no Chinese JV [M S4, S9]

9.8 SCIL's position: moat and gaps

Strengths [Fact unless marked]Gaps [Est.]
Branded domestic franchise: 81% of domestic sales branded, 60 depots, about 40,000 dealers, 4.4m farmers, top-10 distributors 2.95% of channel salesTechnical plants near full (92 to 100% at the AGM); no PLI; growth capped until Dahej (FY2028-29) or third-party sourcing
Speciality and proprietary: 24 to 30% of domestic revenue; products of the last three years about 8% of domestic revenue; Excalia Max and Lentigo "met or exceeded internal targets" in a bad FY26Licence dependence for the speciality third; royalty creep risk
Channel discipline: firm-order supply, no dumping, near-zero returns while "the industry saw unprecedented return of herbicides"; protects margin but limits top line in strong years (Q1 FY26 +30% domestic with front-loading, then weak Q2 and Q3)Limited export scale (16 to 21% of sales vs PI, Sharda, UPL)
Balance sheet: net cash; ROCE 31% (company basis); cash Rs 2,549 cr (Jun 2026)Idle cash and an unannounced diversification path (semiconductor chemicals, "beyond agro")

9.9 Porter's Five Forces and barriers [Analyst View]

ForceLevelEvidence
Buyer power (farmers, dealers)ModerateFragmented buyers (top-10 = 2.95%), but price-sensitive in a weak monsoon; SCIL's firm-order policy trades volume for pricing integrity
Supplier power (SCC, Chinese makers)HighSCC is the sole registered import source for several products and sets intra-group prices; China sets generic technical cost; 47% of inputs imported or indirect
New entrantsModerateRegistration is complex, expensive and slow (200+ registrations held), but generics registrations are obtainable by anyone with data; no PLI to help locals
SubstitutesModerateBiologicals, GM crops, natural farming (long-run); drones change application, not the molecule
RivalryHighFragmented generics with Chinese price discipline; MNC and large Indian peers; counterfeit risk (QR codes help)

Barriers and moat [Analyst View]. Real barriers are registrations, the branded dealer network, SCC's early-trial access and a clean credit record. The moat is medium and partly borrowed: it works on the speciality products SCC licenses, while the generic two-thirds competes against Chinese cost and Indian peers. Pricing power is limited to branded formulations; the market-share estimate (about 3.4% of industry, about 5.4% of domestic) says SCIL is a mid-sized, high-return participant, not a price leader.

Margin question (ICICI Securities): management would not guide a decline: "margins which we are getting will be the most sustainable". Dahej Rs 150 cr "progressing on track", new projects "one by one, roughly every year", no incremental revenue from announced capex in FY27; custom synthesis to SCC Rs 100 to 150 cr maintained; "we don't need capital or manpower from Japan"Cautiously optimistic

12.10 Open questions for management on the 27 Oct call [Est.]

  1. Royalty product list expansion and any change to the Rs 2 cr cap.
  2. Q2 FY27 export outlook after +26% in Q1.
  3. FY27 price versus volume split in the domestic business.
  4. Timing of the next Dahej project approval and the semiconductor-chemicals decision.
  5. Utilisation at technicals (80 to 100% range quoted) and whether growth is capped.
  6. Cash deployment framework and dividend payout.

Final Verdict

[Analyst View] Aamara Capital, 21 Oct 2026. Pre-results: Q2 FY27 due 26 Oct 2026, call 27 Oct 2026, 2:30 pm IST.

Business QualityStrong31% ROCE (company basis), 81% branded, debt-free, licence-dependent speciality
Management QualityMediumclean audit, no pledge; board turned over 1 Sep, 31% dissent on advisory fee
Financial QualityStrongno debt, CRISIL AA/Stable, 97% five-year cash conversion
ValuationExpensive33.1x P/E, ~25x EV/EBITDA, ~40x core, vs 4% sales CAGR
Overall ViewNeutralgood business, full price, print due; verdict TRACK

Bull case

  1. A debt-free, cleanly audited franchise earning 31% on capital (company basis) with record margins (EBITDA 20.7% in FY26, 21.9% in Q1 FY27) through a weak-monsoon year, 83-day receivables and no herbicide returns: the channel discipline is real.
  2. The parent is feeding the pipeline: India elevated to SCC's early-trial tier, Excalia Max and Lentigo ahead of target, Dahej (Rs 150 cr) as the first of a series, and Rs 100 to 150 cr of custom synthesis for SCC; the multiple has already fallen from about 50x to 33x, and cash of Rs 2,058 cr (net, March, agent build) to Rs 2,549 cr (management gross, June) is 11 to 13% of market cap.
  3. Domestic institutions are accumulating (DII up from 6.02% in Dec-23 to 9.68%, with seven straight quarterly increases), the Q2 FY26 comparison base is soft (sales -6%), and the 27 Oct call gives the first MD commentary, launch status (TopGrain, Helibax) and possible cash-deployment news.

Bear case

  1. Valuation leaves no room: 33.1x reported and 33.6x adjusted earnings, about 40x core, PEG about 4 and a 67% premium to the 20.1x peer median, for a business with a 4% five-year sales CAGR, 8% profit CAGR, technical plants at 92 to 100% (AGM), no incremental revenue from announced capex in FY27 and Dahej revenue only from FY2028-29.
  2. The parent captures the optionality and sets the rules: sole import registration, undisclosed distribution-agreement term, a new 3% royalty with no sunset, a Rs 16,235 mn related-party limit (50.6% of sales) approved with no valuation report, and cash whose deployment needs "formal approvals from our board and our parent company SCC" while the payout is 12%.
  3. Governance transition and noise: independent chair, MD and ED all exited on 1 Sep 2026; the likely Chair is the outgoing MD on a Rs 26.5 mn advisory fee that 31% of public institutions opposed; the Aug-Oct fall of 32% and the 3 Jul spike are unexplained; FY27 reported revenue and margins will be distorted by a gross-booked pass-through; inventory is up to 124 days.

Base case (12 to 18 months) [Analyst View]

Most likely. Core agro revenue grows low to mid single digit (FY26: +5 to 6% ex-animal nutrition), with reported revenue pushed higher by the animal-nutrition pass-through (up to about Rs 800 cr of gross revenue above FY26 (815 before rounding) at the Rs 10,000 mn ceiling, at a 4 to 5% margin). EBITDA margin on an agro-only basis holds in a 19.5 to 21.5% band (CRISIL: 19 to 20% sustainable; management: margins "most sustainable"), with gross margin pressured by 10 to 15% input inflation and softened by the three price rises. Adjusted PAT stays near the trailing Rs 571 cr, or a little above (EPS about Rs 11.4 to 12.0), helped by treasury income and a flat 25% tax rate, and held back by the royalty and rising inventory carry. Reported FY27 PAT will not be comparable with FY26 because of the Rs 26.9 cr insurance gain and the FY26 Labour Code charge.

Range. On that earnings base, a 28x to 35x trailing multiple implies about Rs 320 to 400; the downside case (growth below 3%, gross margin below 38%, or a de-rating to the 25x seen in the sensitivity table) is about Rs 286 or lower; the upside case (a second Dahej project, a firm semiconductor or non-agro use for the cash, domestic growth above 8%) is a re-rating toward 40x, about Rs 458. These are scenario ranges built from the arithmetic in Tab 12.6, not forecasts or price targets; no broker target or consensus exists in the research files to cross-check them.

Five things to remember

  1. The Q2 FY27 results are expected on 26 Oct 2026 and the call is on 27 Oct 2026 at 2:30 pm IST; Q2 FY26 (sales Rs 930 cr, EBITDA 23.4%, PAT Rs 178 cr) is the base. The company holds calls only for H1 and the full year.
  2. Q1 FY27 reported PAT of Rs 214.5 cr includes a Rs 26.9 cr one-off insurance gain; the adjusted figure is about Rs 194.5 cr (+9%). FY26 carries a Rs 16.1 cr Labour Code charge. P/E is 33.1x reported and 33.6x adjusted.
  3. The FY27 related-party limit with the parent is Rs 16,235 mn (50.6% of sales) against Rs 7,100 mn approved for FY26 and Rs 4,754 mn actual; Rs 10,000 mn is an animal-nutrition pass-through booked gross at 4 to 5% margin, and a 3% royalty on two products (cap Rs 2 cr) starts in FY27.
  4. Net cash is Rs 2,058 cr on the agent's March build and Rs 2,549 cr is management's gross figure at June; debt-free; CRISIL AA/Stable (29 Apr 2026); promoter 75.00%, no pledge, no ESOP, share count unchanged since 2019.
  5. The stock fell about 32% from Rs 565 (14 Aug) to Rs 384 (21 Oct) with no company disclosure explaining it; the 3 Jul spike (8.1% delivery) looks like trading churn, not a block sale.

Five questions before investing

  1. What are the term, renewal and termination clauses of the SCC distribution agreement, and which products does the 3% royalty cover (and can it widen)?
  2. What do Q2 FY27 domestic growth, gross margin (against 43.1% a year ago), inventory days (124 at June) and the Brazil receivable (about 211 days) show, once the animal-nutrition pass-through is stripped out?
  3. Who chairs the board from 1 Sep 2026, how are the committees constituted with three independents of seven, and what will Dr Ramachandran's priorities be?
  4. What will the Rs 2,549 cr be used for (second Dahej project, semiconductor chemicals, non-agro) and will the 12% payout change?
  5. Why did the stock fall 32% from 14 Aug, and who sold or bought on 3 Jul (bulk and block data could not be retrieved)?

What would change the verdict [Analyst View]

DirectionTriggers
Towards engagementQ2 FY27 domestic growth of at least 5 to 10% on the soft base with agro-only EBITDA margin of 21% or better; confirmed launch of TopGrain and Helibax; a second Dahej project or a value-accretive use or return of the cash; confirmation of independent-chair or committee arrangements; disclosure of the distribution-agreement terms; a lower entry price (the 25x to 30x rows of the Tab 12 sensitivity, about Rs 286 to 343) with fundamentals intact
Towards avoidanceGross margin under about 38% with no price follow-through; inventory days rising further or write-downs; the Brazil receivable stretching; more royalty products or a higher cap; a glyphosate PCO ruling against the industry; an adverse explanation for the August to October fall or the 3 Jul trade; a further board or management exit; related-party utilisation running far above the Rs 6,235 mn ex-animal-nutrition level

Opinion [Analyst View]. Sumitomo Chemical India is a debt-free, high-return, cleanly audited agrochemical franchise whose profit quality is good but whose growth is slow, whose technology and intra-group pricing sit with the parent, and whose board changed five weeks ago. At 33x earnings, about 25x EV/EBITDA and about 40x core earnings, the de-rating from 50x has removed only part of a premium that rests on the parent's pipeline and a Dahej plant that earns nothing until FY2028-29. With the Q2 print and call due on 26 and 27 Oct, one unexplained 32% fall, a noisy FY27 reporting year (pass-through revenue, royalty, one-offs) and no broker view to calibrate against, the evidence supports a watching brief with explicit triggers rather than committing capital now or walking away from a sound business.

Sources

All sources were fetched on 21 Oct 2026 unless a date is shown. The six research files were written by two agents from NSE archive PDFs, the FY20 to FY26 annual reports, investor presentations, concall transcripts, CRISIL, SEBI shareholding XBRL, AGM voting results, Screener and Yahoo Finance. Each file carries its own key table and the keys are not merged. The business, market and narrative files share one S-number scheme (each lists only the numbers it uses, so a number can be missing from one file), whereas the financials, governance and "Street" files use short names such as AR26, PPT and CALL; the same document therefore carries different keys in different files (table 14.1). The six tables below reproduce each file's legend with full URLs (shorthand such as "S12-S16" and "same path pattern" has been expanded). In the body of this report, a prefix names the file: B = 1_business, F = 2_financials, G = 3_governance, M = 4_market, N = 5_narrative, H = 6_heard. Page references stay in the numbering of the file that gave them: business, market and narrative cite printed pages of the sumichem.co.in annual report PDF; financials, governance and "Street" cite PDF pages (#page = printed page + 2) of the bseindia.com annual report PDF. They are never converted.
